Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Families,

What a beautiful end to our week! Last night the Shady Tree Middle School class put on their play  Excalibur! for the community, and it was a big hit!

That was followed by a potluck dinner and then... the graduation of our 8th grader, Sophie (When the Evergreen class was promoted last year, she stayed one more year to complete her time with us). It was a very touching ceremony, honoring Sophie, which started with me breaking into tears three words into my speech. That was followed by Pam honoring Sophie for her years of service in so many areas, and Pam breaking into tears.  Ania followed with her own words and then read a letter Sophie wrote to our school to say how these three years have changed her life. Ania, brave and strong, got through the whole thing. It was evident how much Sophie has, indeed, changed our lives for the better.  We will miss her dearly.

Words from Sophie (with her permission):

… l am very grateful to you for helping me become the person I am today. I will miss everyone - you are and always have been my chosen family… I am so glad I found Waldorf. It has been one of the best things in my life. It has allowed my to release my ‘wings' instead of tying them to my back.

In addition to the very sweet classroom appreciation events today, I was so happy to see so many of you in the Grove this morning for Parent Appreciation! I was unsure if anyone would come, and then - bam - it was a huge party, which flowed out into the hallway!  If you did not know this already, our MV parents love their coffee. ;-)   Some parents met other parents for the first time, and I truly enjoyed people pointing out their own children’s hands on the  heart of hands canvas. Thank you to Kari and Meghan (yes, parents themselves) for helping to make it so special. If you did not receive a heart magnet, please scroll down for info.

Enjoy your well-deserved weekend, and we will see you for the last week of school!
Lisa
From the Office

Lost & Found - Last Chance!

Please make sure you are checking the Lost & Found daily for any of your child's missing belongings.  All leftover items will be donated to the church's Food Bank next week.

Have You Seen Me?

Ms. Paola is missing her new red mug, seen in this photo.  It was in the kitchen last Friday and hasn't been seen since.  If you accidentally grabbed it or have seen it, please let Paola know!

Rug Donation Needed

The Willow class is looking for rug donations to cover the concrete floor in their new classroom.  The space is 20 feet 6 inches by 11 feet; either one large rug or multiple smaller rugs would be great.  Please email us if you can help!

Parent Appreciation Day
If you didn't pick up your Parent Appreciation magnet today, please stop by the Grove next week and pick up our small token of appreciation. Thank you for all that you do!
Our 2019-2020 school year calendar is now available!  View/print it here.

MVWS Store Spotlight

Ms. Ririko Oshiro, Maple Village’s extraordinary handwork teacher, is selling Padraig pure sheep wool handmade slippers in various sizes and other lovely handmade and natural items in the store. All proceeds will go toward Ms. Ririko’s continuing education training funds! On behalf of Ms. Ririko and all the students who benefit from teaching, thank you for your support!

 Class Updates

The Strings and Chorus concert was a great success! The children and teachers worked diligently and presented their audience with many beautiful pieces. They really showed their “True Colors”. Thank you to Lee Gumbiner for capturing this lovely video.  You can watch it on YouTube or download it!

Thank you all so very much, Maple Village community, for supporting our Shady Trees middle school students with their play and their fundraiser!  It was so wonderful to have you in our audience!  Congratulations to Ryan Gumbiner for winning the door prize raffle!
- Ms. Kubik
Congratulations to the Shady Trees on a wonderful rendition of "Excalibur: The Story of Young King Arthur"! It was a full production complete with piano and recorder accompaniments. Bravo!
This past Thursday, our Grades students belatedly celebrated May Day at Marina Vista Park with a selection of games, activities, and maypole dancing.  Thank you to MVWS Games Teacher Ms. Ciana for creating and leading this fun celebration!

Parent Village Meeting Minutes & Wrap-Up

Thank you to everyone who came out for our last Parent Village meeting of the school year!  If you missed it, you can read a PDF of the meeting minutes HERE.

The following important messages came out of the gathering:

Share your thoughts - Parent Village Feedback email address:
As a village we believe that it is very important to have a place for our parent community to share your thoughts on what the school may be doing well, may need improvement, or ways that you would like to help in an open and anonymous fashion.  We have created an email for you to send your thoughts to: ParentVillageFeedback@gmail.com

This email will be overseen by Andi Levine and Britt Sexton who will track your feedback.  Please use the above email address to let them know what is working, maybe even what you love about the school.  This is also an opportunity to let us know what you would like to see changed, suggestions you may have and resources that you may know of.  YOUR
VOICE MATTERS and we want to hear your thoughts and to find a way to implement any changes that are needed.  If we see a lot of similar feedback, we will present this to the Board to ensure our Parent Voices are being represented.  If you e-mail us and want to be anonymous, please include that in your email and know your wishes will be 100% honored.  We take that super seriously!

Parent Village Leadership roles are changing:
Our amazing Hands Chair, Chris Sexton, is handing over the reigns of his committee. Thank you Chris for your many years leading the charge to keeping our school safe, sturdy and beautiful.   Chris will stay involved but we need a new Hands Chair.  If you would like to volunteer to take over please email to info@maplevillageschool.org. Angie Hendrix will be the Parent Village Secretary for next school year.  Thank you Angie for stepping up to keep our meetings on track!

Opportunities to stay in touch with the Village over the summer:
We plan to have monthly handwork gatherings over the summer in preparation for Harvest Faire which will take place on November 9, 2019.  This is a great opportunity to stay in touch with the community over the summer and get a head start on your volunteer hours for 2019/2020 school year.  Stay tuned for invitations to join us and work on craft projects for the fair.  If you have craft ideas please contact Andrea Bush at Ad.bush@yahoo.com

Enrollment and $400 Contribution update:
Thank you to everyone who has made a $400 contribution to the school.  So far we are at $17,411 for the 2019 Parent Contribution Donations. 31 families contributed for 47 students.   Also enrollment for grades, we have 65 students enrolled for next year out of a projected 78.  And for early childhood, 43 enrolled out of a projected 60.  There are still a handful of families who have told us they will be returning but have not yet re-enrolled, and a decent amount of new families in process.  We love our families, please get your enrollments into Alice and save your spot at our precious school.

Learning the Magic of Helping Stories for Children in Need:
UPDATED

Come join us to learn how to create healing and therapeutic stories for the children in your lives. Together we will explore the techniques and structures to developing original stories for children.  With the help of archetypes, metaphors, and story motifs, you will learn to craft magical stories to touch, support, and heal a child’s heart.

For those of you who feel that you are not talented at writing or telling stories, you will be amazed to learn that you are innately gifted simply because you are human.  For eons, the human heart and soul have been guided and warmed through the language of pictures - story.  Movies, plays and books have spoken to each of us and helped us at various points in our own lives.  Now, begin to learn the craft of storytelling and creation as we enter the power of story together!

When: Saturday, June 8 from 10am-2pm
Where: Maple Village Waldorf School
Cost: $30 for individuals and $40 for couples
How to enroll: Put your name along with your payment (cash or check made out to Kathy Rinden) in a designated envelope, which you will find in the school office.  We need a minimum of 6 participants to hold the class.

Kathleen Rinden, M.A. has been a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher for 22 years.  She has been trained in Therapeutic Storytelling by both Nancy Mellon and Susan Perrow.

TEACHERS: You may use your professional development funds for this workshop - please talk to Pam if you're interested!
   Waldorf Community
Hi there! We're the Burleson Family (Anne, Joel, June and Hart) and we'll be joining the Maple Village community next school year. June will be in the 2nd grade and Hart will be in Kindergarten. We look forward to meeting you all!
We currently attend Richmond Waldforf School in Richmond, VA, but we'll be moving to Long Beach in July. Speaking of which, we're looking for leads on rental homes. Preferably 3 bedrooms, dog friendly and in a nice area that's walkable to things to do (furnished would be a bonus but not a deal breaker).
We're so excited to explore Long Beach! We've heard so many great things -- we actually have neighbors that lived there for 10 years and just moved back to VA...ahhh The Universe!
Personally, we don't really know the area, so leads and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much and can't wait to start this adventure! My email is annebarronburleson@gmail.com if you'd like to reach out. Thanks again!
