Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Families,

I hope you are having a wonderful Friday! Our faculty and staff are hard at work on campus closing out this year and planning for next.

We wish to send enormous gratitude to Andi Levine, her team of volunteers and to all of the parents who either helped plan, carry out or attend the Spring Gala. It was incredible!  A special thank you to Lee Gumbiner for making it possible for us to hold our Gala at MOLAA once again. It is truly a gift. The whole night was dreamy - from the creative and festive decorations, unique and valued auction items, the open bar and very yummy taco truck to the SO fun music and dancing. Thank you all! It was very refreshing to celebrate each other.

Congratulations to Charlotte Guest and Ririko Oshiro for graduating from the Waldorf Institute of Southern California last weekend as well!

We invite everyone to our Grades Strings & Chorus Concert this coming Tuesday, May 28th at 6:00. The event is free and will be held at Grace First Presbyterian Church at 3955 N Studebaker road. It is a wonderful time to see what the students have been working on all year, while getting a glimpse of what is ahead for your child (details below.)

Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Warmly,
Lisa
Ms. Kelley and Chris welcomed their new baby into the world!

Ms. Kelley let us know that it's been a beautiful experience as they transition into their new normal.

Board Meeting Summary

Dear Villagers,

The Board held a regular meeting last Thursday (5/9/2019) from 5:30 - 9:30pm.  Two prospective Board members sat in at the Board meeting. A summary of the discussions follows:

  • The enrollment coordinator provided the Board with an update on enrollment for the 2019-20 school year.  The number of students already enrolled and number of expected enrollments were identified and discussed. Approximately 63 of a projected 70-80 are currently reenrolled in the grades, as of 5/9, with more to come.
  • The Board received an update from the Parent Participation program representative.  Planning for next year and concerns related to Live Scan delays and parent participation were discussed and resolved.
  • An update was provided on the family $400 contributions to the school. Approximately $18,000 of the projected $48,000 has be received by the requested due date of May 1.
  • The Board reviewed the current year’s financial projections through the summer months, and looked ahead to the 2019-20 school year’s financial projections.  The school’s financial picture continues to improve, with projections of ending the 2018-19 school year with a small but positive balance. The budget projections for next year also continue to look positive after accounting for the most recent enrollment projections.  The continued need to explore a bridge loan to help with providing flexibility in the budget over the next two years was identified. Options to be researched and reported by next month.
  • The overall need for more Board members was discussed.  An individual was identified to be invited to the next Board meeting.  The Board will continue efforts to fill the vacant position for EC Faculty rep, the newly vacant position for Treasurer and for the future need for an individual to take over the work of the Board Secretary.  It was agreed that the Board needs to continue to grow and recruit new members, with all members pledging to actively search for suitable individuals with needed qualifications within the MV family and also in the surrounding community.
  • A discussion around equitable compensation for EC staff was introduced and discussed.  The topic will be revisited at the next meeting after further research is conducted.
  • Finally, a fundraising update was provided by Angie Hendrix.  The fundraising committee’s plans for the remainder of this year and next year were discussed.
Congratulations to Ririko Oshiro and Charlotte Guest, who just graduated from teacher training at the Waldorf Institute of Southern California (WISC), and Victoria Seaborn, who has completed her Waldorf Practical Arts Training (WPAT). They join many others among our faculty and administration who have completed or are currently enrolled in Waldorf studies at WISC and elsewhere. The path of professional development for Waldorf teachers can be long and arduous, and the Board of Trustees appreciates the dedication and thoughtful care you all bring to the children in our school.

Scrip Update

As our school year is winding down, families will be receiving an invoice from the business office to collect any unpaid Scrip donation money ($75 in donations) for the 2018-2019 school year.

I do not presently have access to the Amazon Smile dashboard, so I cannot track your Smile donations.  If you would like to screenshot your total in what Amazon has contributed to Maple Village on your behalf since September 2018, please send that to
Scrip@maplevillageschool.org and I will update the spreadsheet that the business office will be using.

Every bit helps so keep up the Scrip!  I can put in one last plastic card order for Shop With Scrip on June 5th if I have enough orders to cover the cost of shipping.

Thank you!
Carver Scott, Scrip Coordinator

   Waldorf Community
Hi there! We're the Burleson Family (Anne, Joel, June and Hart) and we'll be joining the Maple Village community next school year. June will be in the 2nd grade and Hart will be in Kindergarten. We look forward to meeting you all!
We currently attend Richmond Waldforf School in Richmond, VA, but we'll be moving to Long Beach in July. Speaking of which, we're looking for leads on rental homes. Preferably 3 bedrooms, dog friendly and in a nice area that's walkable to things to do (furnished would be a bonus but not a deal breaker).
We're so excited to explore Long Beach! We've heard so many great things -- we actually have neighbors that lived there for 10 years and just moved back to VA...ahhh The Universe!
Personally, we don't really know the area, so leads and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much and can't wait to start this adventure! My email is annebarronburleson@gmail.com if you'd like to reach out. Thanks again!
Becoming is the third film in a series of short films produced on the occasion of the centenary of Waldorf Education under the direction of the award-winning Californian documentary filmmaker Paul Zehrer, and which provide an insight into the inclusive diversity of Waldorf Education under the most diverse cultural, social, religious and economic conditions around the globe.

No age has a deeper impact on the whole of life than the first years of childhood. "During those first seven years, children develop their bodily foundation for life. They explore and experience the world with their senses and through meeting the other. These early encounters in life have a deep influence and long-lasting effect on the making of their own being,” says Clara Aerts, coordinating member of IASWECE and co-producer of the film, which was shot in the USA, Israel, Japan, India, South Africa, Guatemala, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany. "The experiences that we make possible - or withhold - for our children at this age form the most elementary basis for their further lives and thus ultimately for the future of humanity."
