Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Families,

People sometimes ask, “Are Waldorf schools art schools?” The answer is, “no.”  Do we teach through the arts? Yes. We teach through many different forms of art. Whether it be mathematics, language arts, science or geography, children learn visually through the beautiful chalk drawings of their teachers, form drawing leading to cursive writing, painting, working with beeswax and clay, and three-dimensional projects. They learn auditorily through the art of storytelling, song, musical instruments, tongue twisters, verses and speech work. They learn kinesthetically through Eurythmy, Games classes, colorful and tactile manipulatives for math, geometric drawing with compasses and straight edges, main lesson movement work (ex: obstacle courses, throwing bean bags to multiplication tables, stomping their skip counting), handwork and woodworking
and gardening which involves all of the senses.

Here is a wonderful article form the New York Times explaining how learning through the arts helps students remember information much more easily than just memorizing.  For 100 years, Waldorf educators have known that arts reach the feeling realm through beauty, and this leads to deep understanding of the material, as well as longevity of memory.

Mariale Hardiman, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education, where she directs the neuro-education initiative, was interested in how children do — and don’t — retain what they learn in school. “A lot of the information we teach doesn’t stick.”

What she saw as a school principal, she said, was that when arts were integrated into the curriculum, “learning became more visible.” Teachers told her “the children would remember the information better when they taught it through the arts.”

Have a beautiful weekend, and enjoy some art!
Lisa

From the Board of Trustees

Dear Maple Village community,

Thanks to all of you who have joined in contributing $400 per child to help keep this year's budget on target.  Like the garden my grandsons helped me plant, we are seeing the results of your generous and thoughtful care.  Seeds are sprouting, and becoming recognizable as individual plants - alyssum and cosmos seemed to have been in the mix as well.  There has been some sadness, patches of the bed where no seeds have sprouted.  I am holding out hope that some are simply slower to germinate, and will show themselves in time.

As of 4/5/2019, we have received $13,086 for 35 kids and 29 families.  Thank you!

With gratitude,
Elizabeth Seward for the MVWS Board of Trustees

Yearbook Early Bird Rate - Last Chance!

Lock in the early bird rate of $40 & PAY NOW!
The cutoff date for this rate is Friday, April 12th, 2019.
You may pay by cash, check, or let the office know you want to be billed (cc payments = extra $4 fee).
Because the rate is dependent on how many books will be in the second order, missing out on the first order's "early bird" pricing could mean paying more than twice as much! Get on it.

ALSO - WE NEED YOUR PHOTOS!
Click here to add to our Google Photos folder, or email photos to mvwsyearbook@gmail.com

Thank you for being prompt in your Yearbook orders!

Scrip Update

Hello Villagers,

Do you shop at Lazy Acres? If so, have you signed up for their scrip reward benefits by using their Lazy Acres Community Card? Every time you shop at Lazy Acres, 4% of your total gets donated back to Maple Village when you use the Community Card. You can track your donation total through eScrip. This is a simple way to passively donate to the school and help to fulfill your yearly scrip donation minimum.

If you need plastic scrip cards from Shop With Scrip, please order by noon on April 5 so that the cards arrive before spring break.
