Dear Maple Village community,
I am currently at the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) conference, as this year we have the honor of it being in Long Beach! Over 5,000 educators from all over the country are attending. I look forward to writing about my experience in next weekās Bulletin. For now, here is Kari with a report on our very successful Experience the Grades event!
Warmly,
Lisa
Hello Villagers,
Thank you to everyone who joined the Experience the Grades on Tuesday. It was the most successful Experience the Grades ever with 28 in attendance. This included families who are not yet part of our Maple Village family! I hope those who attended walked away with a new appreciation for the richness of Waldorf education. For those not able to attend, here is a recap of what Mrs. Reilly and Ms. Paola taught our parent "students" for the evening.
Mrs. Reilly taught lower grades (1-4th) and started out with an obstacle course, then taught numbers and counting with a math circle and math gnomes (Pasha Plus, Tanya Times, Dominic Divide, and Samuel Subtraction) as the children in 1st Grade learn. She told a story of Steiner's philosophy that teaches through the human experience which coincided with a beautiful chalk drawing of two rams butting heads. The "students" were given the freedom to draw the chalkboard drawing as it was or play with color and make their own picture It was discovered that we have some very talented parents!
Ms. Paola gave some personal background of her experience with upper grades (5-8th) and that parents should look to 8th Grade as the goal. It is the result of the foundation laid in Early Childhood and Lower Grades. She had the parent "students" do a stretch with a sing-along and explained the importance of movement in the upper grades. She moved on to upper grades math with a timed quiz. It was explained that they are in competition with themselves and not each other. The Pythagorean Theory was displayed and proved how a2+b2= c2 is true.
The overall take away from parents who attended was a fun night that shed light on how the Waldorf approach teaches the child in a truly holistic way.
