Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village families,

At this time of year, things can quickly ramp up as we try to prepare for the holidays - purchasing gifts, accepting invitations to parties, organizing family events, managing class and extracurricular performances, baking, grocery shopping and finding that last parking spot...  In an effort to enter the holidays with ease, we discussed this topic at Discussion with the Dean this morning.

When I asked the participants to share their wishes for this holiday season, here is what filled our chalkboard:
  • Connection to family
  • Less stress
  • Looking inward
  • Meaningful gifts and time
  • Empowerment
  • Time to appreciate the memories
  • Be in the moment
  • More about giving than receiving
  • Space for reverence
  • Being on the same team
  • Staying healthy
Do you see any of your wishes in that list?  If so, here are a few of the ideas that arose:

Having a ā€œGiving Advent Calendarā€ in which each day there is a little task of doing something for someone else; telling children stories about giving such as  The Rabbit and the Carrot; planning ahead to find a schedule/rhythm everyone can commit to and feel good about before deciding ā€˜on the flyā€™ and possibly overcommitting; actually scheduling time to slow down and foster reverence for being in the moment together (our own Winter Spiral is a wonderful example of this!).  In Waldorf education, we teach through the heart, so showing children the love of giving is much more effective than ā€™tellingā€™ them that giving is more important than receiving.

I read this article aloud, and in the end, we all agreed that  ā€œhaving and experiencing are very different.ā€

May you travel through the coming weeks with intention and love,
Lisa

Winter Spiral

Winter Spiral will be held on Sunday, December 9th and Monday, December 10th in the MVWS Social Hall!

This is a powerful experience for both family and child. Your child will be going on a journey and we will be able witness their strength and bravery. The music will start and one by one, the children will walk the spiral. Who they are at this time is very special and the Winter Spiral will give you the chance to really see that. If you would like to know more about the meaning of Winter Spiral, we recommend this article from City of Lakes Waldorf School.

Important reminders for Winter Spiral:

  • Be on time as we will not be able to open the doors for late families.
  • This is a silent event - please, no talking.
  • Please dress your child in pants or leggings.
  • Have them wear simple, easy to walk in shoes.
  • Their tops need to be well fitting, not loose or flowing because of the candle.
  • All childrenā€™s hair needs to be clipped or tied back (buns or high ponytail work best).
  • Please, no cameras during the ceremony.
  • If you have a small child that is restless please exit quietly.
  • If you are not able to attend, please let your child's teacher know.
  • If you are planning to have siblings walk during a different time slot, please let their teacher know as soon as possible.

Scrip Update

Hello Villagers!  Please place orders for plastic scrip cards by Wednesday, December 12th so that we have enough time to ship them to the school before we let out for Winter Break.  As always, Iā€™ll place the purchase order as long as we have enough orders to cancel out the cost of shipping and still make some money.

Some families have bought Visa gift cards, which can be used anywhere that takes Visa, and these families have already met their Scrip donation for the year.

At any time, if you donā€™t want to buy plastic cards, you can gift the ScripNow e-cards to anyone by checking the box ā€œmake this a gift?ā€ and emailing the recipient.

Any questions?  Contact Carver at scrip@maplevillageschool.org

Annual Toy Drive for Church Food Bank

Dear MVWS community,

As we face the holiday with glad hearts and tender feelings towards our family and friends, we ask that we remember those neighbors out there in our greater community who struggle to put food on their tables and to whom holidays occasion moments of sadness because gifts, such as toys and books, are impossible luxuries beyond their reach. For these neighbors in need--so that their households may shine with our light of giving and gratitude-- we ask you to reach within your own home and share the surplus that is within your reach.

Please donate new or gently used toys and books so that these may be wrapped, ordered by age group, and gifted to less fortunate children this holiday season. Imagine how a forgotten toy in your child's room might delight another child, who expected little or nothing knowing their family's circumstance. We have watched parents come to the church, the weekend before Christmas, with ages and names of their children and take away a gift for each child with smiles of profound gratitude upon their faces. This is the true gift of these holidays.

Should you also want to donate nonperishable canned and boxed goods--such as organic beans, soups, sauces, pasta, etc.--we also welcome them.  There will be a large drop-off box in the Grove for your donations. May they overflow with your generosity!

We are also looking for volunteers (children and adults) to help wrap the gifts while the Food Bank is open from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15th.
