Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Families,

Thank you all so much for my most amazing surprise this week!  As I watched children arrive to school in their green shirts, I began to wonder if I had not read a memo, forgot an important school uniform plan, or completely missed some months, and it was really March 17!  I had a huge smile on my face seeing a sea of GREEN on the playground. Thank you to the Gratitude Committee for spearheading this beautiful way of showing appreciation for the work that went into our U.S. Department of Education award and to all the parents and children for participating in the celebration!
This photo may NOT be shared or reposted on social media or anywhere online. Thank you!

This Tuesday, October 16, is a full day!  We have our first Walk Through the Classes in the morning for people interested in enrolling in our school. This is a unique time when I take parents through the classes during the school day to watch our education in action, and then I follow up with a Waldorf 101 talk. If you are new to our school, never had this opportunity as an incoming family, and wish to experience it, please let us know.  We are able to have current parents on the tour as long as space allows.

We have the pleasure of having Lou Harvey-Zahra coming to our school in the afternoon and evening.  She will be holding a teacher development workshop on positive discipline for all of our Early Childhood teachers in the afternoon, and then she will give a lecture to our parent body and community in the evening.

Lou brings her topics with humor, wisdom and inspiration to help you understand your child at their different stages of development. Please come to hear how Waldorf Education also meets your children at these stages.  For those of you who have heard her speak before, this is a new topic.

Tuesday, October 16th
6:30 - 8:00
Maple Village Social Hall
$10 suggested donation at the door
(This is an adult evening, and no child care is offered on-site)

Her book Happy Child, Happy Home has had 4 print runs in 4 years and is translated into 3 languages!
If you would like to purchase her books, please bring cash, as she travels back to Australia soon after.

Reminder that Monday is Faculty In-Service (our teachers are off-site observing their peers at other schools) and school is closed.
Have a great 3-day weekend!
Lisa

Coffee with the Board

Please join members of the Board of Trustees for an informal conversation over tea or coffee on Saturday October 27, 9:30 to 11:30 in the Social Hall. This is the first of a series planned for this year.
We want to know what's on your mind, how we can work together to support this vibrant community at Maple Village, and we will attempt to respond to questions you may have.

Tea and light refreshments will be provided.

As this is an adult conversation, please make other appropriate arrangements for your children. Childcare will not be provided.

On behalf of the Board, we look forward to meeting you there!

Darshi Balasuriya (President)
Elizabeth Seward (Vice President)

Parent Handwork Morning

Harvest Faire is just around the corner!  Please join us this Wednesday, Oct. 17th from 9:15-11:30 for Hand Crafting in the Grove.  We will be working on crafts to prepare for our upcoming Harvest Faire and the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade.

Photos
Our 1st grade Laurel class is beginning their first math block with the help of four number gnomes, each representing one of the four processes.  Pasha, the addition gnome, loves to eat and take her time adding more, one-by-one; Tanya Times loves to fly through the air doing gymnastics and other tricks.  She prefers to group things together and counts very fast, hence would rather multiply than count by ones.  Samuel Subtraction is worried and fretful for he frequently loses things through the holes in his pockets.  Others come to his aid, such as Dominic Divide, who divides his possessions equally and shares willingly with Sammy.  These characters give you a window into the four temperaments: Phlegmatic (green), Choleric (red), Melancholic (blue), and Sanguine (yellow).

Waldorf Community

Hello Dear Families,

2018 has been an empowering year for women, but also painful and confusing.  And Iā€™m speaking from the perspective of an adult.  I constantly wonder about the messages our girls are getting, both directly and indirectly. What do they hear us whispering (or quarreling) about, after each loathsome event in the media?  What snippets of news do they chew on, but canā€™t quite digest?  What questions they have, but are too timid to ask?  Page Turnersā€™ aim is simple; to give girls a space to think critically, to disagree, to deepen empathy, and build a supportive community.  Topics are approached by journeying through appropriate and moving novels, written by and for women.

If youā€™d like your daughter to be a part of the conversation, Iā€™m hoping to make it even easier by offering $20 off using the promo code CHAPTER1.  Tuesdays, at the Hangout on 4th, starting October 16th.  Fitting for grades 4/5/6.

I'm happy to answer any and all questions you may have.  Feel free to contact me @ PageTurnersBookClubLA@gmail.com

Warmly,

         Cori Amendt
