Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Community,

Welcome back from Winter Break! I truly hope you had a restful and bonding time with your families. Please enjoy these days while your children are young at home! Over our break, our oldest went to Spain and Portugal with friends, and our youngest went to Idaho with his friend’s family. Our middle one decided he would prefer to not be an only child. ;-) I found the most wonderful simple pleasures in just spending individual time with each when they were home, even if it was just running an errand, and also delighting in just watching them eat my homemade pancakes all together on our last Sunday morning when everyone was under one roof.

During January, we will be having several different evaluation visits, and I wanted to share this, as sometimes it is good for you to know we are not operating on an island.

Every three years, we have a WECAN visit (Waldorf Early Childhood of North America), and our visit is happening next week. This visit follows the completion of an in depth self study from our Early Childhood Department and is a time when a representative from the organization comes for a day to observe classes in session and meet with faculty and staff in order to evaluate our Parent/Toddler, Preschool and Kindergarten programming. Their goal is to assure we are working under Waldorf principals and moving forward with growth and education. We value this greatly, as many suggestions arise, and we feel the support of a larger body of knowledge and experience.

Each of our grades teachers is evaluated by an outside professional in their 2nd grade year and their 5th grade year. This year, both of those teachers will be receiving a 2-day visit from an evaluator at the end of January. The visit includes a teacher self-study, class observation, looking through main lesson books, materials and curriculum plans, and meeting with the teachers, their peer mentors and me. We are very thankful for this process as well, since it always includes validation for our strong program as well as recommendations moving forward.

Please remember there is no school on Monday due to the MLK holiday. Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,
Lisa
From the Office
Hello Beautiful Maple Village Families,

We hope you all had a most wonderful holiday season and that your New Year is off to a great start.

Due to the fact that I (Hara) am out of the country and Grace is currently teaching my kindergarden during the time while I am away, she will not be able to be in Long Beach on Wednesday afternoons until after spring break.

We would like to continue running the program and Grace almost cried when she realized that she would not be able to see these kids until April! So, we would like to offer KITE on Fridays after school for this one session. Grace can arrive at school around 2:30 to gather the 1-2 graders, she will hang with them, have a snack etc.. then when the 3-4th grade gets released at 3, she will begin class. Class will be from 3-4:15.

We will begin next Friday the 19th and will offer an 8 week session. (We will move back to Wednesdays after spring break.)

So sorry to change it up. Thank you for your on-going support and interest in our program, it is greatly appreciated!

See these bright stars shining in the night sky? No, actually they are foil-wrapped camping meals cooking in the fire ring at Malibu Creek State Park where our Shady Trees class spent the evening stargazing in the night sky for their astronomy studies.
