Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Families,

What a week we had with the Parade on Saturday night, Explore Waldorf Education on Monday evening, Strings/Chorus Concert on Tuesday evening, and we received a City of Long Beach recognition on Wednesday! (see all below)

Explore Waldorf Education was so informative and inspiring. I am very thankful to our panel of teachers, parents and high school students, who spoke so truthfully about the benefits of Waldorf Education from a real world perspective. Larry Tong (parent of a 6th grader and Kindergartener) reflected on the demands of a structural aeronautical engineer and how engineers are suddenly expected to think outside of the box, when they were trained their whole lives to think and perform inside the box. He also spoke about his own child’s education and how in Waldorf Education, we teach everything at a particular time in the child’s development - not a moment sooner or later - but exactly when it is the right time. As such, his child is thirsty for what is to come, instead of burning out on what he is learning. His son can’t wait for the more advanced science ahead and is salivating!

Jessica, a high school teacher, and Waldorf alum herself, explained that she valued her education because we see things as a system instead of isolated units. This consistent approach helped her tremendously when working in the field of allergies and looking at the whole picture to find cause and solution.

The high school students talked about the difference of instruction (to fill) and education (to draw forth). They also gave us a beautiful image of them as seniors and the duality of standing at the top of a mountain, looking down at all the years behind them and the richness of their education, and at the same time, knowing that everyone is looking up to the top of the mountain at them. They feel the responsibility of passing along their experience to others. They are passionate, poised and ready to dive into college. One of them also talked about the difference of being “pointy” and well-rounded. Ask me about it!

This Bulletin is FULL of exciting and important events happening NOW. PLEASE scroll through so you don’t miss a beat!

With appreciation,

Lisa

Winter Spiral

Winter Spiral will be held this Sunday, December 10th and Monday, December 11th in the MVWS Social Hall!

This is a powerful experience for both family and child. Your child will be going on a journey and we will be able witness their strength and bravery. The music will start and one by one, the children will walk the spiral. Who they are at this time is very special and the Winter Spiral will give you the chance to really see that. If you would like to know more about the meaning of WinterSpiral, we recommend this article from City of Lakes Waldorf School.

Important reminders for Winter Spiral:

  • Be on time as we will not be able to open the doors for late families.
  • This is a silent event - please, no talking.
  • Please dress your child in pants or leggings.
  • Have them wear simple, easy to walk in shoes.
  • Their tops need to be well fitting, not loose or flowing because of the candle.
  • All children’s hair needs to be clipped or tied back (buns or high ponytail work best).
  • Please, no cameras during the ceremony.
  • If you have a small child that is restless please exit quietly.
  • If you are not able to attend, please let your child's teacher know.
  • If you are planning to have siblings walk during a different time slot, please let their teacher know as soon as possible.

Pennies with Purpose

We are having a penny drive fundraiser to allow us to help a family in need this holiday season. Each of the grades classes were asked to decorate a container and challenged to collect pennies and make a difference in a family’s celebration. If we raise enough money, we will get presents, food, jackets and a Christmas tree if appropriate. Please join us in this challenge. If you have any questions please contact Pam Villano at 562-434-8200 or Business.admin@maplevillageschool.org.

Thanks for your help and have a wonderful holiday season!

Toy & Food Drive

* If you would like to come wrap toys or work in the food bank, please join us on Saturday, Decemeber 16th at 8:00am at the church! *

Hello Maple Villagers,

It has been a long time since I have played the role of the village crier and how gladly I embrace this role especially now, for a mightily mighty good cause!

Hear ye! Hear ye! Hear ye!

As we face the holiday with glad hearts and tender feelings towards our family and friends, I ask that we remember those neighbors out there in our greater community who struggle to put food on their tables and to whom holidays occasion moments of sadness because gifts, such as toys and books, are impossible luxuries beyond their reach. For these neighbors in need--so that their households may shine with our light of giving and gratitude--I ask you to reach within your own home and share the surplus that is within your reach.

Please donate gently used toys and books so that these may be wrapped, ordered by age group, and gifted to less fortunate children this holiday season. Imagine how a forgotten toy in your child's room might delight another child, who expected little or nothing knowing her family's circumstance. I have watched parents come to the church, the weekend before Christmas, with ages and names of their children and take away a gift for each child with smiles of profound gratitude upon their faces. This, I believe, is the true gift of these holidays.

Should you also want to donate nonperishable canned and boxed goods--such as organic beans, soups, sauces, pasta, etc.--we also welcome them.

There will be two large drop-off boxes in the Grove Room for your donations. May they overflow with your generosity!

I hope that I have cried well and clear!

Thank you for hearing me,

Cathrine Ji

I'll be starting a new jump rope class at a dance studio in Long Beach, and I thought some of the MVWS students might be interested in joining. The class will take place at:

The rest of the information is included in the flyer attached above. Parents can register their kids at the website - www.letsjumpla.com.
