Dear MVWS Community,
As some of you are aware, LBUSD has declared Monday and Tuesday to be modified days due to the forecasted heat wave. There is a forecasted high of 95 on Monday and a 97 on Tuesday in our area of Long Beach. Temperatures will be higher in other areas of Long Beach, and many school rooms in the public district do not have air conditioning, so it is important for LBUSD to be equitable for all the schools.
Although some of our rooms do have window air conditioning units, and we can share with other rooms, your children’s safety is our priority. Because of this, we are implementing modified heat days for our Grades classes.
Kindergarten, Preschool and Parent/Toddler will run as normal, as they already have a regular early dismissal.
Monday: All Grades will be dismissed at 2:00.
Tuesday: All Grades will be dismissed at 1:00.
Some teachers will stay on campus after dismissal each day (Monday from 2:00 - 3:00 and Tuesday from 1:00 - 3:00) to be with children who are unable to be picked up at the dismissal time. There is no charge for this.
They will congregate in rooms with air conditioning units.
Aftercare will begin at 2:30 for Grades 1 & 2 and 3:00 for Grades 3 through 8 and will stay open until 5:00 as usual. There is an air conditioning unit in the aftercare room.
EC Aftercare will also still run from 1:00 - 3:00, as there is air conditioning unit in the EC Aftercare room.
In addition, we will put these measures in place:
- Teachers will rotate window air conditioners as needed.
- Parents can bring bags of ice and ice chests to help cool off classrooms (creating swamp coolers).
- Parents - please have children wear hats to school and pack extra water.
- If we assess it is best for children to be outside at recess, we will spray the hose and keep children in the shade.
- If you choose to pick up your child earlier than the release time, you must sign them out in the office.

Harvest Faire
Hello Villagers!
We are only 3 weeks away from our Harvest Faire! It is crunch time!
Our goal is to bring 500 people to this event and to raise $10k. We
need your help to spread the word far and wide. We have a Facebook
Event Page that I'd like to have you share on your wall, with friend
and family and to share in any groups you are a part of.
And when we get those 500 people to our Faire we need to make sure
they have an amazing time!!! This means we need 100% of our community
to volunteer in some way shape or form before the event and at the
event. Please talk to Kari, Melissa, your room parent or email

AND! I'd like to share some exciting happenings at our Faire this
year! Our own woodworking teacher and parent Larry Tong and Anton
Striegl (with the help of Aaron and Peter) have built a full size
Catapult for a new game! So excited to try this! Check out the
video!!!

Fundraising - Scrip
What's one of the easiest ways to raise money for Maple Village and the awesome education our kids receive??? You got it! Scrip!
Maple Village participates in several Scrip programs, details for which are on the Giving tab of Maple Village's Website: http://www.maplevillageschool.org/giving/. We will give a little introduction to each Scrip program in the next few bulletins, but to keep the action items short and sweet, we're starting with Shop With Scrip, the program that contributes the most to Maple Village.
If you haven't already, sign up for Shop With Scrip now!
- Go to http://bit.ly/sws-JoinYourProgram
- Enter 9L53297333484 in the blank space and click "Register"
- Follow the prompts to pick a username and safe password, and enter your family information, then click "Register" at the bottom
- Please list the student(s) you are associated with in the box provided - this helps us allow extended family to also join our Scrip program.
- Once you have registered you will need to go to Presto Pay and register your checking account in Presto Pay in order to place orders for scrip. ShopWithScrip is a secure shopping portal, and they verify your bank is yours by depositing some small random amounts that you will need to verify (a couple of cents each). Once you have verified those amounts, e-mail Jessica Tan at JessysBlessings@gmail.com with your approval code.
- Jessica will activate your account, and you are ready to shop!

This week we had our first salad harvest. We grew, washed and ate a spicy salad mix with homemade dressing! We practiced our weights and measures and flavors. Some liked their dressing a little more salty, some liked a little more vinegar and some had second helpings. We all agreed that we need more salad every week! |
